Jake Lacy (continuing the seamless shift from all-American good guy roles to all-American monstrousness that he began in The White Lotus) as Berchtold hides his laser-like focus on Jan behind a mass of flirtatious charm, manipulative half-truths, and a browbeaten wife he can send out to defend him when things get tricky despite his careful calculations. In the wake of Borgman’s film, the Broberg parents came in for a huge amount of criticism for not protecting their daughter, for succumbing to Berchtold’s machinations, for exposing her to years of abuse and not, at the very, very least, cutting off all contact after the first kidnapping.Ī Friend of the Family gives us the best sense yet of the how. The memoir, podcast and especially the documentary – Abducted in Plain Sight, a 90-minute film by Skye Borgman released a few years ago – have given us the what and the malevolent why. When they returned, the Brobergs maintained contact with Bob (the father feared a sex act between him and Berchtold would come to light, the mother had an affair with him) and two years later Berchtold kidnapped Jan again. It was a story she would believe for years. “They” (a tape recording by Berchtold, played through speakers while a drugged Jan was tied to a bed in his mobile home) told her she was half-alien and had to procreate with a male companion of her choice to save the race and her family. Berchtold held her for a month and convinced her through an elaborate setup that they had been abducted by aliens. Nevertheless, it may well be that she starts a new trend and it will come to be de rigueur for any fictionalised account of a true story to get someone “real” to gloss it and those that don’t will come to look untrustworthy – even though logic would dictate otherwise.Ī Friend of the Family unpacks how the entire Broberg family was groomed by neighbour, member of their church and sexual predator Bob Berchtold when he became obsessed with their young daughter Jan (played by Hendrix Yancey in her preteen years, McKenna Grace later). It has an odd effect, possibly counter to the one intended, by implicitly acknowledging the voyeurism inherent in watching (another version of) her extraordinary, baffling story and giving us permission to indulge it. The latter appears pre-credits to introduce the endeavour, assuring us all of her blessing. Now there is a dramatisation of it – A Friend of the Family (Peacock on Sky and Now) written by Nick Antosca and co-produced with two members of the clan: mother Mary Ann and daughter Jan. It’s set to premiere on October 6th.Render it how you will – and so far the Broberg family’s history has been a memoir, a documentary and a podcast – their story remains one of the most jawdroppingly incredible in the history of true-crime tales. Eliza Hittman ( Never Rarely Sometimes Always) will direct multiple episodes, including the pilot. The drama stars Anna Paquin as Mary Ann Broberg, Jake Lacy ( The White Lotus) as Robert Berchtold, Colin Hanks (The Offer) as Bob, Lio Tipton ( Why Women Kill) as Gail Berchtold, and Hendrix Yancey and McKenna Grace as Jan Broberg.Ī Friend of the Family comes from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Nick Antosca ( The Act). There’s also a documentary series on Netflix titled Abducted in Plain Sight, which was just absolutely insane and unbelievable! This horrifying story is based on Mary Ann Broberg’s memoir Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story and she serves as executive producer on the series. This is the story of how their lives were permanently altered - and how they survived.” The series is based on the harrowing true story of the Broberg family, “whose daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by a charismatic, obsessed family ‘friend.’ The Brobergs - devoted to their faith, family, and community - were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them. Peacock has released a trailer for the upcoming true crime drama miniseries A Friend of the Family, starring Anna Paquin and Jake Lacy.

Even worse, the white jersey features no teal at all (except for the Nike logo), which makes their white set the least favorable element of this entire set. It’s good idea but the fact that teal is not the primary is still a shame for the only team in the league with teal in their identity. Probably just taller risers and switch out the stock turn signals for something less conspicuous. I’m just gonna ride it for a bit and see what I wanna change before I do. I pressed out the baffles from my stock mufflers using a hydraulic press and a hunk of rod that's a sloppy fit and a hunk of wood under the aft end of the muffler for protection. 2-into-1s don't sound like a Harley and for the gobs of money they cost there's not a great payoff. Do not replace with drag pipes which exist to strangle engines (unless HP loss is your thing, I don't judge too harshly). The stock crossover downpipe works very well. They aren't horrible but I want a scoot I can fix anywhere with minimum tools that isn't even a slight hassle as a daily rider. (Time is money and more CNC machined parts are cheaper than higher labor cost per engine.) Early TCs have no HP advantage and have the shit cam chain tensioner which is more money to correct (if crank runout permits) with gears. TCs usually work fine but the design was made overly complex for production convenience. I inspect the starter contacts while cover is removed since they are often burnt when owners crank with a weak battery but they're dirt cheap to replace so no big deal. I add a push button solenoid end cover to every bike I own with a Denso starter. EFI is fine to replace multiple carbs which was great forfour bangers but not great on a Harley ya want to keep especially because tuning is expensive while carb tuning is dirt cheap. OTOH I've had to replace many worn out EFI pumps on cars and trucks (I worked at a used car lot) and the HD design is generic like the rest. I do a charging system test with a volt meter (takes mere minutes) so I know what I'm working with.ĬV carbs are great and I've never been stranded by carb problems on any vehicle. Then buy the factory service manual and parts catalog, change all fluids (everyone forgets fork oil but that shit goes bad too), inspect all hoses and wiring and ride it a while before modification. 95 is a good year so if it's in nice shape for the right price go for it. Yes, “Wizards” is an elaborate allegory about good, evil, and the ever-present rise of fascism, but it’s also a throwback to the Sixties, with the wizard Avatar standing in sharp contrast to the darker, comic-book style character of Blackwolf. But after one of the evil legions is captured, Avatar goes with the Princess Elinore (Jesse Welles), the warrior Weehawk (Richard Romanus), and the captured warrior named Peace (David Proval). Blackwolf uses it as inspiration, and, emboldened by Hitler’s own plan, begins attacking various kingdoms on the planet with the goal of world domination driving him. Good triumphs, but evil vows a return, and what facilitates that return is the discovery of Nazi propaganda artifacts-including a projector that brings black-and-white newsreels of Hitler and his charismatic rise to power over his goose-stepping minions. And in the aftermath, races of wizards, elves, and fairies reestablished themselves-in particular, two wizards born to the same woman, one good (Avatar, voiced by Bob Holt) and one evil (Blackwolf, voiced by Steve Gravers). “Wizards” is a post-apocalyptic film that happens long after Earth has destroyed itself via a series of gigantic explosions. Compared to Bakshi’s X-rated full-length animated feature “Fritz the Cat” (1972), which depicted cartoon sex and drug use, “Wizards” IS pretty tame. It’s also pretty bizarre-partly because of the story itself, partly because of Bakshi’s aesthetic (he mixes animation styles), and partly because of the low-budget animation. I guess it’s all a matter of perspective. “No,” I said, thinking of other scenes showing fallen fairies with equally skimpy outfits, a fairy in chains who starts to disrobe for Nazi-armband wearing mutant soldiers, and plenty of elves, fairies, mutants, and quasi-humans who are killed by arrows, guns, spears, tanks, and other weapons of destruction. But on the commentary track, writer-director Ralph Bakshi says, “This is my first kid’s film, my family film.” The lyrics are his supreme achievement, to my mind. The allegorical poems are dream-like and imaginative, at once passive and active. The narrative poems tell the stories of ordinary people, but tell them in such a manner as to evoke that deep yearning, so that the ordinary matter is suffused with immense dignity. But, if Gandhi was the "Great Soul, Tagore was the "Beautiful Soul"įrom a deep appreciation of the varied imperfections of earth, Tagore's poems yearn for the single, perfect ineffable. Whatever gifts are in my power to give you, It can be uplifting and it can plumb the depths of sadness. His mom died when he was 14, his wife when he was 43, his sister in law committed suicide, a daughter died a year after his wife and his youngest son died four years after that. It was Tagore who first called Gandhi "Mahatma" (Great Soul). Tagore spent considerable time in England and was born in Calcutta. His work was originally done in Bengali and I've read that the poetry is even more beautiful in Bengali than in English. Tagore may have been the greatest poet ever. Interesting, but unlikely to inflame those new to Tagore. But those same marvelous afternotes reveal the sometimes extensive liberties Radice takes, which leaves one wondering just whom one is truly reading. The poetry itself fares slightly less well, though the strength of the images wins through more often than not. Radice's introduction and extremely thorough afternotes (which both explicate the poems and discuss why he chose certain phrases, noting any deviations from the strictly faithful translation)are both interesting and helpful. That's an awful lot of impressed to bring to any reading of verse, particularly one rendered in translation.įrom what little I've read on the subject, it seems Tagore's own translation of his work from Bengali to English were less than successful, hence William Radice trying his hand at it here. This is a dude who chatted it up with Einstein. The first non-Western winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Tagore was a polymath: painter, poet, political theorist, physicist. The problem with reading Tagore is that, if you know anything about the man, it's difficult to raise your face from a prostrated we're-not-worthy position long enough to make sense of what's on the page. The complete works of Rabindranath Tagore (রবীন্দ্র রচনাবলী) in the original Bengali are now available at these third-party websites: His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed-or panned-for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.Īwarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West." With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. And exuberant works such as “New Rain” and “Grandfather's Holiday” describe Tagore's sheer joy at the glories of nature or simply in watching a grandchild play.įor more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Poems such as “Earth” and “In the Eyes of a Peacock” present a picture of natural processes unaffected by human concerns, while others, as in “Recovery – 14,” convey the poet's bewilderment about his place in the world. His ceaselessly inventive works deal with such subjects as the interplay between God and the world, the eternal and transient, and with the paradox of an endlessly changing universe that is in tune with unchanging harmonies. The poems of Rabindranath Tagore are among the most haunting and tender in Indian and in world literature, expressing a profound and passionate human yearning. |
